Sydney Fernandez

A mother of three children and an avid reader, assistant principal Sydney Fernandez came to MVHS from Fremont High School where she had worked as a dean and later an assistant principal. After returning from maternity leave, she was given the opportunity to work at MVHS. There initially was no guidance counselor for the A-Gou last name group at MVHS, which offset more of the workload onto Fernandez who took up the role instead. Despite this, Fernandez says that everyone at MVHS has been very welcoming.
“Without a guidance partner, it’s been super busy,” Fernandez said. “I've had to learn a lot, but … I'm really happy to be here [and] I've really enjoyed my time here so far.”
Born in Long Beach, California, and raised in Irvine, Fernandez’s love for school and her teachers growing up heavily influenced her career path. Fernandez wanted to replicate the positive relationships she had built with her teachers.
Since she has three children, Fernandez shares that she has “busy family life” at her home in San Mateo, but in her free time, she loves to read — her favorite book is “The Giver” due to its simplicity and “beautiful” writing style. She also enjoys watching YouTube videos that spark her interest and teach her new things. After her first few weeks at MVHS, Fernandez finds that she has had no issues and wants to get to know more students and staff as the school year progresses.
“I [want to] make sure that every Matador, every person here, feels connected to the community and feels like they have a place at Monta Vista,” Fernandez said. “That's something that I would really like to work on.”
