After meeting her husband in Australia, Foong Chan, began her career in the Bay Area as a substitute teacher. After hearing good things about MVHS regarding its academics and seeing a job opening, Chan applied and was delighted to be offered the long-term sub position for Special Education teacher Ruth Seyer. She teaches academic communication, a course that helps students succeed in social situations.

Prior to working at MVHS, Chan was a long term substitute teacher at Fremont High School, and describes being offered the same amazing support. Chan mentions that her favorite part of teaching is watching students communicate with each other and feel more confident about being able to advocate for themselves.

One of Chan’s most memorable instances while teaching occurred when a student of hers mentioned they wanted to form a new club. Chan believes that taking anthe initiative takes a lot of courage, exactly what she feels the goal of her class is.

Aside from teaching, Chan has two children she enjoys cooking for. In particular, she cooks lion’s head meatballs — large pork meatballs braised with vegetables. She also enjoys spending time hiking with her husband.

After her time at MVHS ends, Chan hopes to finish her training to become a Special Education teacher. She is currently in her first year of the two-year program run by the Santa Clara County  Office of Education.

Chan mentions that both the staff and students are a pleasure to interact and work with which allows her to feel more excited in the classroom.

“The students are wonderful,” Chan said. “They have no behavior issues at all. Everybody is very respectful to me and each other. This is a very academic driven school and the kids are wonderful.”
